Wandering around Porto’s narrow streets, you’ll stumble upon facade after facade of buildings clad in unique tiles. Intricate patterns take shape in a myriad of hues like inky blues, faded persimmon, ivy greens, and mustard and add a layer of beauty to an already picturesque setting. Even when the paint is fading or chipped, the magnificence still prevails. Tiles are also found elsewhere in Portugal, like Lisbon, and became prominent in the 16th and 17th centuries after Portugal’s King Manuel I went to Seville and quickly became enamored. When exploring the city of Porto, you’ll find them in almost every nook and cranny, so keep your eyes open to what you could discover.
