Surrounded by thick vegetation, deep blue lagoons and the vibrating calls of Howler monkeys at dusk, Las Lagunas Boutique Hotel is a prestigious property located on a 300-acre nature preserve in the Guatemalan rainforest of San Miguel Flores. It is the ultimate escape for the adventurous traveler who is seeking to reconnect with nature while enjoying the perks of a five-star luxury experience in the heart of the jungle.

The 19 suites of Las Lagunas (Spanish for the lagoons) edge two of the five lagoons on property. Elevated above the water, each cabin blends seamlessly into the environment with wooden walkways shaded by tropical trees, large palm leaves and richly colored flowers. Inside, cabins are simple with wood paneled structures accented with natural fabrics, animal suedes and leathers that add texture and a touch of the wild to each space. Large floor to ceiling windows open out to an enclosed porch where you can take a dip in a private hot tub with an unobstructed view of the rainforest and enjoy the evening glow of the setting sun.

Under the shade of a large sprawling tree, an infinity pool overlooks Laguna Quexil, the hotel’s largest lagoon; when temperatures reach the triple digits, you’ll want to stay poolside with a drink. The pool menu features fresh fruit cocktails and sugary, classics like a mojito, to help cool you down as you bath beneath the Mayan sun. If you are looking to enjoy a small bite in the comfort of your swimsuit, the shrimp ceviche or the guacamole platter, complete with guatemalan style fried beans and pico de gallo are the perfect light dishes.

For a more elevated and picturesque dining experience Shulton, located in the main building, is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. One large, glassless window frames the lush landscape of the forest and water creating an unforgettable backdrop to any meal. The locally caught white fish, lightly seasoned and perfectly cooked is served atop a bed of potatoes and mushrooms and is a must try for anyone looking to enjoy the flavors of Flores. The Spa and Wellness Center is tucked away in the forest canopy, and offers the ultimate, relaxing experience complete with a private pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi.

The property even has a private museum filled with a treasure trove of Mayan artifacts such as exquisite jade jewelry, ancient pieces of pottery and decorative sculptures for viewing. The room is small but beautifully designed with vibrant neon colors which showcases remains from the various regions of the country, including the Petén, Maesa Central and Pacific Sur. The museum is open daily upon request through the concierge.
